Description
Taekwondo is a modern martial arts style with roots in a tradition that has grown from over 2000 years of development. Taekwondo, founded in Korea, has been traced to 37 BC by drawings discovered on walls of ancient royal tombs. Taekwondo means "the way of hand and foot" or "the art of kicking and punching." It is an Olympic sport and the fastest growing martial art world wide with more than 50 million practitioners in 120 countries.
Our instructors have trained directly under Grand Master Nam Souk Kim. One of few 9th degree black belts in the world, Grand Master Kim sits on the council for the World Taekwondo Federation, headquartered in Seoul, Korea. He is among the founding members of the Chung Do Kwan, one of five disciplines of modern Taekwondo formed in the mid 1940's. Grand Master Kim currently resides and teaches in California, but visits regularly to provide instruction and conduct black belt promotion testing.
Taekwondo classes are taught to help students to achieve the ultimate balance between body and spirit through superior physical conditioning combined with a philosophy steeped in the tenets of inner discipline and indomitable spirit. We train in a safe environment where courtesy, integrity, perseverance and self-control are emphasized. Whether you're looking to get in shape or serious about competition, Grand Master Kim's Taekwondo at the YMCA is an activity that you - and the entire family, from ages 5 to 85 can grow in and enjoy.
